    2. Preparation

This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

Since each student has their own assessment sheet, the lesson can be used by individuals or groups. If a group, students should take turns.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

Give each student, or groups, a diagram and an assessment sheet(s). The students place their bot on the start circle facing toward the top of the page. The top light will be red. Students press the on/off button to begin. There is a short delay, then the robot traverses the diagram, pausing at each intersection. As each number is spoken, the student writes it on the assessment sheet, then they write their answer for the sum. After a delay for the student to finish, the bot speaks the answer twice. The student then writes the bot's answer in the space provided. When the lesson is completed, the student returns the assessment sheet to the teacher.

If a student is suspected of waiting for the correct answer each time, the problems are recorded on the sheet so just perform an oral spot check to discourage such behavior.

I recommend practicing by saying the numbers yourself. Many young students have trouble with tables.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

The Addition lesson today will give you a chance to practice adding two numbers with values between 0 and 10. Remember that addition has the commutative property, which is useful, for example, when adding 2+8, we can compute the easier 8+2.

The bot will stop at each intersection and speak two numbers. Write each number on your answer sheet, starting at Problem 1. Calculate the sum and write your answer on the sheet. You have about 5 seconds. The bot will speak the answer and then repeat it a second time. Write the bot's answer on the sheet. When complete, return the materials to the teacher.

If there are any problems, just start over until you have completed ten.

Start the Blockly program; the top light should turn red. Place the bot on the start circle facing toward the top of the page. Press the on/off button once, then follow the instructions starting at Problem 1.

    5. Supplements

    A. Lesson Closure (Optional)
Give tips for how to wrap up the lesson and assess student learning. (Want to add an attachment? Use Part C, below.)

Examine the assessment sheets. If a student is showing difficulty, the exercise can be repeated.

The lesson can also be repeated without the assessment sheet. If higher digits are causing problems, change the random range for "set x" to, for example, 7 to 9.

    B. Academic Standards (At least one standard required)
Choose a category from the dropdown on the left. In the blank on the right, begin typing the number of the standard.
