There are 6 levels of this lesson, intended for students to finish 1 level per learning session.

    • In Level 1, students will capitalize the first word of each sentence.
    • In Level 2, students will capitalize people’s names.
    • In Level 3, students will capitalize dates and holidays.
    • In Level 4, students will capitalize geographic names.
    • Level 5 is a review and students will decode a “Message in a Bottle.”
    • Level 6 prompts students to write a short story with 5 images Ari displays from the previous levels.

For younger students, we recommend this activity in small groups with teacher guidance.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

    Introduction

In this lesson, students embark on an ocean adventure, helping a ship's captain navigate by solving capitalization challenges. They’ll correct sentences and uncover hidden items along the way, practicing key grammar skills through an engaging nautical theme. By the end, students will use their knowledge to write creatively and reinforce their understanding of proper capitalization.

    Instruction

    App Setup

Assist students with turning on Ari. Then find the Letter Lab app. Within that app, you will find the Capitalization Captain lesson with the captain emoji. All students should have this lesson opened at the beginning of the activity.

    Instruction

    Explain

There are 6 levels of this lesson. We recommend doing 1 level per learning session. We’ve highlighted the focus of each level. Review the capitalization concepts for each level before completing the activity.

Each level comes with its own activity sheet. Students assist the captain in navigating the ocean by correcting sentences displayed on Ari’s screen, each containing 1-2 missing capital letters. As students fix the errors, Ari reveals an image of an item the captain has spotted along his journey.

Level 1 - Capitalize the first word in a sentence.

    Level 2 - Capitalize people’s names.

Level 3 - Capitalize dates and holidays.

Level 4 - Capitalize geographic names.

Level 5 - Review all previous skills through a fun "Message in a Bottle" activity. Students will decode a message by fixing capitalization errors, then Ari will prompt the words for the secret message.

Find Level 6 in the Lesson Wrap Up.

    Instruction

    Running and Troubleshooting

We recommend first demonstrating how to complete each sentence. Follow the steps to use Ari with levels 1-5:

    1. When you open the level, Ari will show the first sentence (with errors) on the screen.
    2. Students will read the sentence and identify the capitalization errors.
    3. Students will rewrite the sentence on their activity sheet with the correct capitalization.
    4. Then students will pick up Ari and give it a shake to reveal the correct answer. Students will check their work.
    5. Students will tap Ari’s screen to reveal the item the captain has spotted along the way. They will cross off the image of the item on the activity sheet.
    6. When students are ready to move on to the next sentence, they will swipe the screen to display the next sentence.
    7. They will repeat these steps for 7 sentences.

If students skip ahead and need to go back, they can press the power button once to go back.

    Lesson Wrap Up

Level 6 - Ari will display five images from previous lessons. Prompt students to write a short story using these images. Adjust the writing requirements based on grade level, guiding them to apply what they’ve learned.

Follow the steps to use Ari with the activity:

    1. When you open level 6, Ari will show the first image on the screen.
    2. Students will shake the bot to reveal the second image.
    3. Students can swipe back and forth between images to review all the images.
