    2. Preparation

This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

Students will be working as a class to code and take turns making words according to what they choose on the random numbered boxes. They will be using split screen projection to see both Ozobot Blockly Editor and the attached word making activity sheet.

    Instruction

Students will start in Level 4 of the Ozobot Blockly Editor. The first part of the program tells the bot to choose a random number from 1-3. Have students go to the Sounds category, drag the "say number 1" block to the workspace, and delete the green number 1 block. Go to the Math category. Drag the "random integer from 1 to 100" block and attach it to the right side of the "say number" block. Change the number 100 to 3 since Ozobot will choose numbers from 1-3. Put the blocks in the following order: small circle, say number, and move.

    Instruction

To choose the second number, reverse the sequence of blocks. The bot will move backward, say a number, and move in a small circle backward. Right-click on each of the three blocks in the workspace and duplicate each block. Put the blocks in the following order: move, say number, and small circle. The say number block stays the same. The small circle block should be medium speed backward. The 6 blocks in order should make an ABCABC pattern.

    Instruction

Next, program your Ozobot to show a random color that will indicate addition or multiplication. You'll start by turning of the top LED. Go to the Light Effects category and drag a "turn top light of" block to the workspace. Add it to your sequence so it is the first block. Go back to Light Effects and add a "set top light color randomly" block to the workspace. Go to the Timing category and add a wait block setting the drop-down to 5 seconds. Duplicate both blocks. Add these four blocks to the end of the sequence. The sequence should be: turn top light of, small circle, say number, move, small circle, say number, and set top light randomly, wait, set top color, wait.
