You or your students can decorate Ozobots to resemble reindeer. I taped brown pipe cleaner for antlers and red circular stickers for noses.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

    Introduction (5 minutes):

    • Introduce the concept of Turbo and Spin codes to the students, explaining how they affect the speed and movement of the Ozobot.
    • Discuss the idea of a reindeer race and the significance of placing these codes strategically on the racetrack.

    Activity 1 - Racetrack Design (15 minutes):

    • Provide students with materials to create their racetracks on a large surface (materials- markers, white butcher paper, two Ozobots per group).
    • Instruct them to design two identical racetracks with straightaways.
    • Emphasize that the challenge is to strategically place Turbo and Spin codes along the track to influence the Ozobot’s movements (you can determine the number of spins and turbo codes for each track).

Activity 2 - Coding the Racetrack (30 minutes):

    • Explain that each student or group will place Turbo and Spin codes at different locations along their designed racetracks.
    • Guide them to consider how Turbo and Spin codes placed in different sequences can affect the Ozobot’s speed and direction.
    • Encourage students to test and adjust the codes’ placement for optimal racing experience.

    Activity 3 - Reindeer Race (20 minutes):

    • Have students or groups compete in races with their Ozobots on the tracks they’ve coded.
    • Each student/group will take turns racing their Ozobots, observing how the strategically placed Turbo and Spin codes impact the race outcomes.
    • Encourage friendly competition and learning from each race to refine their code placements.

    Conclusion (5 minutes):

    • Gather the students and discuss their experiences and observations during the race.
    • Emphasize the importance of strategic thinking and problem-solving in coding and how they can apply these skills in various situations.

This lesson integrates coding concepts of Turbo and Spin codes with a fun and engaging reindeer race theme, encouraging students to think strategically while enjoying a competitive coding activity.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Instruction

    Welcome, Racers!

    Introduction:

Today, get ready to embark on an exciting reindeer racing adventure using Ozobot Turbo and Spin codes!

Activity 1 - Designing Your Racetrack:

    1. Materials: Grab materials (markers, white butcher paper, and two Ozobots.
    2. Design: Craft two identical racetracks with straightaways.
    3. Strategic Placement: Add Turbo and Spin codes along the track (ask your teacher for the number of codes permitted on each track.).

Activity 2 - Coding Your Track:

    1. Place Codes: Think strategically! Put Turbo for speed and Spin for turns at different spots.
    2. Test & Adjust: Test your codes with Ozobot and tweak placements for the best racing experience.

    Activity 3 - Reindeer Race:

    1. Compete: Get set, go! Race your Ozobot on your coded track and other classmates' tracks as well.
    2. Observe & Adapt: Watch how your codes affect the race. Adapt placements for better performance.

    Conclusion:

Discuss your racing experiences. What worked well? How did code placement affect the race?

Hope you have an epic Reindeer Race adventure!
