This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

Make sure each group of 2-4 students has access to a large map of Virginia, an Ozobot, markers and/or color code stickers, and will be able to view the text. You can project it on the big screen, focusing on one paragraph at a time. Allow students to follow the instructions in each paragraph and test their Ozobot before moving onto the next part.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Instruction

Ozobot has traveled back in time! He is going on a journey through Virginia after the Civil War. Ozobot starts at the boundary in Maryland. He first wants to travel through the towns along the coast of the Chesapeake Bay.

New roads were also built across the state. Next, Ozobot took one of the new roads to the Southern part of Virginia to see the fields where tobacco is grown. After the Civil War Virginia continued to focus on tobacco as a cash crop. Keep drawing your line to the Southern part of Virginia. Since Ozobot is in a cart pulled by a horse, he has to go slowly. Use a code to make him go slowly.

Next, Ozobot visited the state capital. Continue your black line to the center of the state where Richmond is. Many of Virginia’s cities were rebuilt and grew a lot after the Civil War. Small towns that were on the railroads also grew. This was so crazy that Ozobot is overwhelmed. Use a color code to make Ozobot spin around because he is overwhelmed!

Most railroads depended on coal for fuel. Ozobot wants to explore areas where coal is being mined. Draw a black line to the Appalachian Plateau so he can see this. Railroads were built all over the US and connected small towns to cities. As a result, these small towns grew a lot. Since trains are quicker than using horses for transportation, we want Ozobot to go quickly. Use a code to make him to do that.

    Lesson Extension (Optional)

Add student instructions for a lesson extension.

    Instruction

Students can use their background knowledge of the regions of Virginia to choose another region the Ozobot should visit and a code to describe what that region was like. Remind students not to let their lines cross or their Ozobot will get "confused" and might not go where they want.
