    2. Preparation

This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

    • Observe student conversation as they explore the bit. Notice language, problem solving and communication skills.
    • Do not provide explicit instructions on the use of the bot. Allow students' interest to spark learning.
    • Have students share and reflect on their learning and understanding from their experimentation.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

    Trigger prior knowledge

What do you think of when I say coding?

Create a mind map/brainstorm for students prior knowledge for display. Add student names to shared information, as assessment for learning.

    Instruction

Inspire students as to what coding can achieve and it's many uses by watching the following YouTube video. It also gives students a glimpse into their potential futures! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59d3UZTUFQ0.

Allow students to suggest items they use in their life that is run by coding e.g. washing machines, air-conditioning, fridges, Xbox, internet etc.

    Instruction

Ask students if they know what we need to code? Accept responses with the intention of leading to hardware and software.

Relate - Hardware is like our body and software is like our brain. Elaborate.

Watch the catchy song to reinforce the basic idea of computers and their two main parts - hardware (things you can touch) and software (runs the computer) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRHhmr-jIhU.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Student Instructions

    Instruction

    Meet Ozzie!

Introduce an Ozobot to the students. Outline the care and manner Ozzie needs to be handled.

Place students in pairs and provide them with an Ozobot. Have them explore the bot and pay attention to what they see and notice. Have students put their hand up when the notice something new to share with the class.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Next, provide students with paper and the black marker. Allow students to explore Ozzie's using paper and markers. Again, have students raise their hand to share what they notice or discover with the class.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Finally, demonstrate small the horizontal strokes used by colour markers when connected to black lines. Provide students with coloured markers and allow them to explore Ozzie's using paper and all markers. Again, have students raise their hand to share what they notice or discover with the class.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Lesson Extension (Optional)

Add student instructions for a lesson extension.

    Instruction

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    5. Supplements

    A. Lesson Closure (Optional)
Give tips for how to wrap up the lesson and assess student learning. (Want to add an attachment? Use Part C, below.)

Reflect Have students reflect on what coding is and what it is used for. Is Ozzie hardware or software? How do I know? Pose the question, how do you think Ozzie is coded? (using steps/instructions from the textas - size, shape, colour of the lines in a sequence).

    B. Academic Standards (At least one standard required)
Choose a category from the dropdown on the left. In the blank on the right, begin typing the number of the standard.

      C. Add Other Attachments (Optional)
Please upload any student handouts, videos, sample solutions, etc. (Max. size: 1 GB videos, 10 MB all other files)

      Add Cover Image
