    2. Preparation

This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

    • Make a cheat-sheet where all 6 color codes are show for each group to reference throughout this lesson
    • Make sure you show you have calibrated their Ozobot before you give them the device. Often it is too difficult at this age for students to calibrate the device. (This will save you lots of time if it is done before handing out the devices).
    • If you choose to let kids calibrate themselves, but the calibration circle on their cheat-sheet that you give them the with 6 codes attached. This means that kids will only have only 2 pieces of paper to deal with.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

    1. At the beginning the class, ask students about their daily routines once they get into school. This would include places that they go to outside of their classroom throughout the day.
2, List those places on your white board (or paper) for example: cafeteria, restroom, playground, special area, then bus to go home).
    1. Tell students that they are going to take your robot on a trip to those various places today using your Ozobot.
    2. You can choose to go in the order in which you have it on your white board.
    3. Tell students that once their Ozobot reaches each location, they robot must do one of the 6 moves they learned about from your codes on the Ozobot cheat sheet.
    4. Make a practice run of things with the kids and show them the code on your paper. Project the paper on the Document camera so that kids can see it at a larger size.
    5. Assign students to a partner and let them come up with the path.
    6. Ask students to record their Ozobot running the course using your iPad (which is optional).

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Student Instructions

    Instruction

    1. Let's pretend that we have a new student who came into the building and joined our class. If that were to happen, we would have to share with him/her our expectations throughout the day.
    2. I would also probably assign him/her a buddy to show this person about all of the special places that we visit throughout the day and a way to get there.
    3. Today, our new student is going to be the Ozobot.
    4. We are going to be using coding to move the Ozobot from place to place around our building.
    5. It is important that we move the Ozobot from place to place in the same order in which you would move throughout the building. So, lets put on our thinking caps and come up with a list of places that we move to throughout the day (that are outside of our rooms).
    6. To do this, we probably need to find something important in our room. What is that item? Our daily schedule on the wall-Yes!
    7. Let's go to the beginning of the day and walk through every place we go outside of our room. I will write all of those places in order of when they occur on the whiteboard. Make sure don't leave anything out!
    (Make your list with kids)
    1. Now what kind of resources do your parents need when they travel in a new city or town that they have never gone before? A Map, correct. Many parents use Google Maps. You are going to use an Ozobot Map. I have made a special one that shows our school today. (Pass out maps).
    2. Who can identify where our room is on this map? (Have kids point that out.)
    3. What other special places do you see on our map? (Let the kids identify all the other destinations on the map also).
    4. Now you are going to direct me to these places in order (as I showed you on the whiteboard), and visit each one of these in the order in which we visit them in the day.
    5. Every time you visit a new location, your Ozobot must do an appropriate color code in that location. For example, if we all go to the restroom, your robot might want to use the color code to Pause. Why would we pause at the restroom? Answer: Because we need plenty of time to wash our hands after using the restoom (this is a good one to help kids with, so they use an appropriate response here).
    6. What other types of color codes could you sue at the cafeteria? Playground? Getting on the bus? (Talk about color codes that could be used for each location throughout the map.)
    7. Does everyone understand the purpose of this project? Does everyone understand the format of what you are expected to do? Any questions?
    8. Once you and your partner color code every portion of this map, you need to run your code. If it works, then you can use an iPad and lapel microphone to record a video and give the information for your Ozobot to follow. (This video can be used by students as Artifact for their Backpack of Success Skills.
    9. Now I am going to buddy you up so that you can work with a partner to come up with your daily routine for your Ozobot. (Tell students their partner's name).
    10. Remember, you are at a voice level of 2 while working. You will have 4 markers (Red, Green, Blue, Black), 1 Ozobot, 1 Ozobot Map, 1 Color Code Key with the calibration attached. If you finish early, you can use the iPad and lapel microphone to record your lesson.
Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Lesson Extension (Optional)

Add student instructions for a lesson extension.

    Instruction

If students need another extension, you could allow partners to go to various K-2nd grades asking the teachers if they would like a video created for their own classroom that would introduce new students in their class to their daily schedules. Once you finish creating the map, you must make the iPad video with the use of the lapel microphone for better sound quality. This would be a helpful resource for classes that have transient populations or have new ESL students too.

You could also have students make videos that are translated into the various languages used in your school, so that students understand where to go on day #1 in their own language.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    5. Supplements

    A. Lesson Closure (Optional)
Give tips for how to wrap up the lesson and assess student learning. (Want to add an attachment? Use Part C, below.)

Allow each group to broadcast their videos for the entire class to watch. Talk about qualities that made for a great video. Ask if there were things that the group could do next time to improve their instruction. Ask students to tell you if the order of the stops were correctly visited.

Discuss the various color codes that were used at each "stop" along the way. Which code did they think was most appropriate for that place visited?

    B. Academic Standards (At least one standard required)
Choose a category from the dropdown on the left. In the blank on the right, begin typing the number of the standard.

      iste-1-d iste-7-a

      C. Add Other Attachments (Optional)
Please upload any student handouts, videos, sample solutions, etc. (Max. size: 1 GB videos, 10 MB all other files)
