    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

Review color codes with class. While not necessary, it is helpful if students have prior knowledge of how these bots work and function using color codes. Review what happens when Evo reads certain codes and the correct way to color the boxes so Evo can read the codes.

    Instruction

Hand out one Thankful Pumpkin page per student. Lead a class discussion on why people celebrate a holiday about gratitude and thankfulness. Ask leading questions such as: Why do you think it is important to be thankful? What are you thankful for? Have students choose four things they are thankful for and write them in the blank spaces on the Thankful Pumpkin page.

    Instruction

Have students plan which codes they would like to use on their pumpkin. Encourage students to use multiple different codes. If necessary, give students a minimum number of codes they must use, such as “Your pumpkin must have at least five different codes.”

    Instruction

Have students use markers to add color codes to their pumpkin and draw black lines over the outlined portion of the pumpkin for the Evo to follow. Remind students the Evo needs thick black lines to navigate the pumpkin properly.

    Instruction

Have students share their finished pumpkin with a neighbor. Have students explain why they chose certain codes and what they expect their Evo to do.

    Instruction

Hand out Evos, and have students use them on their pumpkins. If students are sharing Evos, have students switch the Evo back and forth every few minutes.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

    5. Supplements

    A. Lesson Closure (Optional)
Give tips for how to wrap up the lesson and assess student learning. (Want to add an attachment? Use Part C, below.)

Lesson Wrap-Up: Have students explain to a partner or to the class how their Evo behaved on their pumpkin. Leading questions might include: Did the Evo demonstrate the correct outcome based on the given color code? If not, what could have caused this? Were their any problems you encountered with your pumpkin or Evo? If so, how did you solve them? This assessment of student learning can also be used multiple times during the lesson. Have students pause the activity, and ask questions about their Evo behavior on their pumpkin. If students do not know the cause of a behavior, task them with figuring out what the cause could be when they start the activity again. Then have students return to the activity.

    B. Academic Standards (At least one standard required)
Choose a category from the dropdown on the left. In the blank on the right, begin typing the number of the standard.
