This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

When students are working in their small groups, you may wish to stress that whichever Maryland symbol that they select for their Ozobot-costume should demonstrate its personality within the color coded path. This way, each group's class presentation will differ and will demonstrate more of their student choice-voice. An example would be the blue crab performing a "tornado" spin when traveling along the Maryland shoreline.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

Introduction: Begin the lesson with a discussion about Maryland Day and why its celebrated. Inform students that in this lesson they will learn about the state's symbols and its five regions. Handout the STEM Mission Description and allow students time to explore the state information.

    Instruction

Activity: Remind students that the state of Maryland has a wonderful array of symbols. Today, they will select a Maryland symbol to dress up their Ozobot and have their Ozobot travel around the state. Students are to consider how this symbol would act within the different regions and reflect these differences within their color-coded track. Students will use the white label strips to present at least three unique color-coded tracks within the State of Maryland.

    Instruction

Directionality: Remind students that they need to look at their Maryland map and consider the direction that their Ozobot will travel. This step is important so that their Maryland symbol behaves-reads the color track in the correct way. Each team will be able to test and modify their codes using the white labels provided.

    Instruction

Run Program: Help students calibrate their Ozobots and run their programs. If there is an error, you can cover up the incorrect code with a white shipping label sticker (or event color code stickers), and students can redo the code.

    Instruction

Presentation and Extension: Have the students present to either their classmates or invite another grade level into your classroom for a showcase. Student groups would present the following information in this class gallery:

    1. One unique aspect of the state that they enjoyed learning about in their research.
    2. The rationale behind their Maryland symbol-Ozobot costume.
    3. Discuss their color-coded track and its connection to their selected symbol.
    4. Reflect on what they would add, change, or eliminate from this STEM-project.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Student Instructions

    Instruction

Engage: Introduce yourself to your Maryland Day STEM small group with one thing that you already know about the state. Once everyone has presented themselves, determine which of the State Information links each member will explore (Handout: STEM Mission Description).

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Explore: Now that you know which link is assigned to each group member, research unique symbols, industries, regional distinctions, etc. Give each team member at least 20 minutes of state research time. Keep in mind that the STEM team will design a color-coded track celebrating the team's interests.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Explain: At this stage, the color-coded track needs to be discussed and designed. The STEM-team may need to test color-code tracks prior to completing their final design. Stress that the team needs to select a Maryland symbol as their Ozobot's costume. Remember! The selected costume must also relate to the color-coded track. (Oh! Be sure to color the Maryland state symbols correctly too.) Use the provided white label stripes to create the color-coded track.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Lesson Extension (Optional)

Add student instructions for a lesson extension.

    Instruction

Lesson Extension: Have the students reflect on their computer science practice with a plus, minus, delta commentary. Stress the importance of Habits of Mind such as problem-solving, perseverence, and collaboration.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    5. Supplements

    A. Lesson Closure (Optional)
Give tips for how to wrap up the lesson and assess student learning. (Want to add an attachment? Use Part C, below.)

Now that each STEM team has run their color coded tracks successfully, think about ways to share their learnings beyond your classroom (e.g. iMovie, social media, in-house presentation).

    B. Academic Standards (At least one standard required)
Choose a category from the dropdown on the left. In the blank on the right, begin typing the number of the standard.

Please upload any student handouts, videos, sample solutions, etc. (Max. size: 1 GB videos, 10 MB all other files)
