    2. Preparation

This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

    Introduction (15 minutes):

    • Begin by reading the book "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" aloud to the students. Encourage them to discuss the book's themes of exploration, challenges, and perseverance.

    Instruction

    Discussion (10 minutes):

    • After reading, engage in a class discussion about the places the character goes in the book. Ask students to share their favorite parts and the challenges the character faces. Relate these challenges to problem-solving in coding.

    Instruction

    Ozobot Introduction (10 minutes):

    • Introduce the Ozobot robots to the class. Explain that they are going to help the character from the book go on a coding adventure.

    Instruction

    Coding Activity (30 minutes):

    • Provide each student or pair of students with an Ozobot, a map or large sheet of paper, markers, and colored tape.
    • Instruct the students to create a path on the map using colored tape, representing the different places the character goes in the book. Each color of tape will correspond to a different action or code for the Ozobot. For example:
      • Red tape: Stop
      • Blue tape: Turn left
      • Green tape: Turn right
      • Yellow tape: Speed up
      • Orange tape: Slow down

    Instruction

    Coding Challenge (20 minutes):

    • Once the paths are set, have students program their Ozobots to follow the path using the provided codes. They can use Ozobot's color code language or, if available, use a computer with Ozobot's OzoBlockly editor for more advanced coding options.
    • Students should test their code and make adjustments as needed to ensure the Ozobot successfully navigates the path.

    Instruction

    Sharing and Reflection (10 minutes):

    • Allow students to take turns sharing their Ozobot adventures with the class. Encourage them to explain the challenges they encountered and how they overcame them.

    Instruction

    Conclusion (5 minutes):

    • Wrap up the lesson by discussing the connection between coding, problem-solving, and the journey in "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" Remind students that like the character in the book, they can overcome challenges and go on their own exciting adventures.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Student Instructions

    Instruction

Introduction (Teacher reads "Oh, the Places You'll Go!"): "Today, we are going to have an exciting adventure just like the character in the book we just read, 'Oh, the Places You'll Go!' by Dr. Seuss. But there's a twist! We're going to combine this story with coding and programming. Are you ready? Let's get started!"

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Discussion (Class Discussion): "Think about the story we just read. What adventures did the character go on? What challenges did they face? Let's have a class discussion and share our thoughts about the book and how it relates to problem-solving and perseverance."

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Ozobot Introduction: "Meet our coding companion for today: the Ozobot! It's a tiny, programmable robot. Your task is to help the character from 'Oh, the Places You'll Go!' go on an adventure by coding the Ozobot's journey."

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

"Here's what we're going to do:

    1. Each of you will have your Ozobot, a map or a large sheet of paper, and some markers.
    2. On the map, use colored tape to create a path representing the different places the character goes in the book. We have specific codes for each color of tape:
      • Red tape means 'Stop.'
      • Blue tape means 'Turn left.'
      • Green tape means 'Turn right.'
      • Yellow tape means 'Speed up.'
      • Orange tape means 'Slow down.'

    1. Design your path creatively and remember the challenges and adventures from the book. You can be as creative as you like!"
Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Coding Challenge (Programming Your Ozobot): "Now, it's time to program your Ozobot to follow the path you created. You can use the color codes on the map to give instructions to your Ozobot. If you're comfortable, you can also use a computer with the Ozobot's OzoBlockly editor for more advanced coding options."

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Sharing and Reflection: "Once you've programmed your Ozobot, we'll take turns sharing our coding adventures with the class. Explain the challenges you encountered and how you overcame them. Think about how the character in the book faced challenges and kept going."

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Conclusion: "Just like the character in 'Oh, the Places You'll Go!' faced challenges and kept moving forward, you too can overcome coding challenges. You've combined your creativity, coding skills, and the themes from the book to create a fantastic coding adventure. Well done!"

These student-facing instructions will help guide your students through the lesson and keep them engaged in the activities.
