    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

Read chosen fictional text to the whole class and lead a discussion about exposition elements: characters and setting. Begin filling in the exposition section on the Plot Graphic Organizer with the student's input. Ask students to share with a partner the main events of the story in chronological order and report back to the whole group how many they found. Note the average number of events they noticed leading up to the the climax of the story. Identify and record the climax and resolution through whole group discussion.

    Instruction

Release students into pairs to complete the Plot Graphic Organizer making sure to number each plot event in the rising action, climax, and resolution in chronological order. Reemphasize the importance of sequencing in story structure and in programming. When they are complete call them back to a whole group and have one or two groups share the sequencing of events they recorded.

    Instruction

Share a completed Plot Graphic Organizer as well as the example Ozobot Story Map. Explain that each numbered plot event corresponds to a numbered event on the Ozobot Story Map. Explain that they will be creating their own map with their own sequences. Each new event will correspond to a step in their algorithm, or new command for their Ozobot.

    Instruction

Students will work in pairs to create their paths with art supplies or a digital version if convenient printing is available. Once their maps are complete, students will login to Ozoblocky and begin programming their Ozobots to follow the story map that they have created, collaborating, and problem solving to create their program and debug any issues until their path is correct.
