    2. Preparation

This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

It's almost Halloween time! When you think of Halloween, what do you think of? (Brainstorm with the students- ghosts, vampires, pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns...)

Let's send the Ozobot on a Halloween adventure. What kind of Halloween adventure will Ozobot experience? A spooky scene? A Not-so-scary Halloween scene? A creepy crawly Halloween scene?

    Instruction

Have students work in partners or groups of three. Their first step is to brainstorm together and decide what the Ozobot will see on its Halloween adventure. Draw out their plans on a piece of paper and using a pencil.

    Instruction

Once your students have a plan, provide them with a larger piece of paper to bring their plan to life. ( a larger white construction paper or poster works well.)

Students should draw their Ozobot path line with pencil first and then trace it with the Ozobot marker. Once the markered line is complete, have the students test their Ozobot to make sure it moves smoothly along the line. Fix any lines that may need adjustments.

    Instruction

Once their map line is on, students will begin coloring the blank color codes on a separate sheet of paper. They will cut those codes out and use a glue stick to glue the codes onto their lines. (This step is very helpful for children who have fine motor difficulties or are young learners.)

    Instruction

Students will begin building and designing the "set" of their Halloween map. They could use any materials to decorate with (construction paper, foam paper, popsicle sticks, recycled goods...)

    Instruction

The final step is for the group to retest the Ozobot traveling through their Halloween map. Make sure the Ozobot can pass through all of the decorations without getting stuck. If the Ozobot can't pass by a decoration then the students will need to adjust their maps and retest.

    Instruction

Have the students present their Halloween adventure maps to their classmates.

BONUS- film the Ozobots traveling through their Halloween adventure maps and have the students edit and finalize the video. Place the video in their digital portfolios or share with their families.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Student Instructions

    Instruction

    1. Brainstorm with your partner/group and decide what kind of Halloween adventure map you will build.
    2. Create a blueprint first using a pencil and paper and sketch out your design.
    3. Once your design is finalized, use a pencil and draw the Ozobot route on the larger paper.
    4. Trace your Ozobot route with the Ozobot markers.
    5. Use the blank coding squares to color in at least three codes for the Ozobot to follow. Cut and glue those codes onto the route.
    6. Test the Ozobot to make sure it moves smoothly on your Halloween map.
    7. Now it's time to start creating and decorating your Halloween map with the props and decorations. (pumpkins, tombstones, ghosts...)
    8. Glue the decorations on and retest the Ozobot to make sure the Ozobot can move smoothly along your path.
    9. Present your Halloween adventure Ozobot map to your classmates.
    10. BONUS- film your Ozobot moving through the Halloween maze and create a final video to share on your digital portfolio or with your families.
