    2. Preparation

This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the concept of a sequence. They will recognize the sequence of their day. They will draw and write about it. They will code their ozobot to travel through their sequential day.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

Tell students that they will learn all about sequencing. Introduce the word, “Sequence.” Ask students to repeat the word. Ask if anyone knows what the word means.

    Instruction

Explain that sequencing means putting things in order. Ask students, “Why is it important to sequence (put things in order)?”

    Instruction

Tell students, “Think about brushing your teeth. What do you do first? What do you do second? What do you do last?” Lead a discussion and ensure all students understand that first, you put toothpaste on your brush. Second, you brush your teeth. Last, you rinse. Explain that the process is a sequence.

    Instruction

Ask students, “What would happen if you change the sequence? What if I brushed first, then rinsed my mouth, and then put toothpaste on my brush?” Lead a discussion around why that would not make sense.

    Instruction

Tell students, “This is why sequencing is important. Human beings need to know how to sequence, and we need to be able to tell robots and computers how to sequence. Today, we will be sequencing our day by drawing pictures and writing words to match. Then, we will code our Ozobot to ‘travel’ through our day.”

    Instruction

Model how to complete the “My Day” Worksheet. A sample is provided, but we encourage you to begin with a blank worksheet so students have a thorough understanding of the steps.

    Instruction

Ask students, “What is the first thing you do during the day?” Allow students to offer ideas. Then, offer your own thoughts, and draw a picture in the first section. This could be as simple as, “The first thing that happens in my day is that I wake up and get ready for school.”

    Instruction

Encourage your students to write words or a sentence to match the drawing. Model this for them.

    Instruction

Then, ask, “What happens next? What do you do after you are ready for school? I go to school and spend the day teaching all of you.” Model how to draw a picture and write a sentence to match in the second section.

    Instruction

Continue to model in the third section. Prompt students’ thinking by asking, “What do you do after school?” Offer your idea. An example could be, “I walk my dog to the park,” or “I make dinner.” Draw a picture and write a sentence in the third section.

    Instruction

Lastly, ask students, “What do you do at the end of your day?” Have students share out ideas. Offer the idea, “I read before I go to bed” or “I get ready for bed” if students need additional ideas. Model drawing a picture and adding a sentence.

    Instruction

Ask students, “Is my day in a sequence?” and say, “Now, I can use my marker to code my robot to travel through the day.” Use a black marker to draw a line for the Ozobot to follow. Model placing the robot on the line and watching it travel through the sequence.

    Instruction

Before releasing students for their own practice, encourage them to think about what they will draw for each section. Once they have ideas, release them for independent practice.
