    I have laminated my tree maps and drawn over the black line and color codes with permanent markers to save paper. I use sticky notes to put the word family at the top. We practice as a whole group prior to beginning.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

    These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Students will work on words in the -at, -ad, -am, -an and -ap families during phonics instruction. These will be the 5 branches at the top of the tree map. Introduce the color codes for u-turn and put them on the ends of the tree map.
