    2. Preparation

This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

Session 1 (optional): I typically read the story during the first 30 minutes session and follow it with a flashlight activity. Acorns are hidden throughout the library, the lights are turned down and each child is given a flashlight (I purchased a 20 pack of small ones from Amazon) to hunt for the acorns. If you have animal stuffies or cutouts, you could use those instead of the acorns to better match the story.

Session 2 (ozobot lesson): Depending on the age group and their experience with Oobots, this could be done in 30 minutes.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

This can be done in two (or three) 30 minute sessions depending on how much time you spend on the story and if you choose to do the optional activity.

Session 1 (30 minutes): Read the story Flashlight to students. This is a wordless picture book so instead of "reading" the story, I ask students what they see in the flashlight. I turn the lights down and use a flashlight to highlight the flashlight in the story. It is available via Youtube if you don't have the book.

    Optional activity (no ozobots):

    1. "A squirrel got into the library and scattered nuts everywhere. The lights aren't working right now so I am going to give each of you a flashlight. Using the flashlight, find the nuts and bring them here to my basket.
    2. Remember to look under the tables, the chairs and on the shelves. You can look on the shelves but do not take any books off the shelves. No running or loud noises. The squirrel might still be here and we don't want to scare him.
    3. Note to teacher: I place a stuffed squirrel high on a shelf. In the dim light, some kids think it is real. You could use cuts outs of the items in the story or animal stuffies instead of acorns to closer resemble the story if desired.
    4. You can turn this into an unplugged coding activity by putting down lines with painter's tape and taping a sheet of paper with the appropriate color code on top of it. Direct students to only follow the lines and any codes they see.

Session 2 (Ozobots required) (30 minutes)

    Setup:

    1. Students will work in pairs. Each pair will need one Ozobot, markers, 1 worksheet, pencil to write name on worksheet, scrap paper. Band-aides, scissors and scotch tape should be available if needed.
    2. Direction codes should be displayed on the large screen or a color copy may be printed for each table group to share.
    3. Have students clear desks so they have room to work.

    Program Ozobot:

    1. Remind students how the boy in the story used his flashlight to find different critters in the book. Review the different animals and remind students why you should avoid porcupines and skunks.
    2. Review your rules for working as a team. For this activity, each partner will write the code on the worksheet for at least two of the codes.
    3. Instruct students to program their Ozobot to find the tent without going past the skunk or porcupine.
    4. Remind students to test their on the scrap paper BEFORE filling in the boxes on the worksheet.
    5. Once completed students will turn in the worksheet and put away all the supplies. Return markers to the appropriate place and throw away any used scrap paper.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Student Instructions

    Instruction

Use direction color codes to help the boy travel from start to finish without passing by the skunk or the porcupine.

The color codes you need are on the screen. Let's review them together. (Read through each direction together.)

Make sure each person in your group writes his or her name on the worksheet.

Write your first name on each "Who?" line that you code. Each of you will do at least 2 codes.

Write your code on the scrap paper BEFORE you write it on the worksheet. You only get one worksheet!

If needed, you may get a sheet of "band-aides" to cover any errors.

When you are done, double check you have filled in each blank and turn it in to me.

Return all markers and Ozobots to the correct spots.

Throw away any used scrap paper including cut up band-aides.
