    2. Preparation

This helps the teacher prepare for the lesson before the class session

    A. Student Materials

    B. Background Knowledge (Optional)

    C. Lesson Tips (Optional)

Add tips for the educator that don't fit into Direct Instruction or Student Practice. You can always return to this page to add more.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

    I Do

Teacher reviews map skills with the students. For K-3 this can include the compass rose and cardinal directions. For grades 4-6 it can include map pins using coordinates.

    Show students examples of maps.

    Instruction

    We Do

The class will create a list of all the businesses in your community. If you live in a large community, only include locations that surround your school. If you live in a smaller community you may want to include businesses in surrounding towns.

Besides including businesses, you will want to include the library, hospital, townhall, police, fire, first aid, etc.

    Sample brainstorm list

Students can create this list in a whole class setting, or in small groups or pairs.

If you want to incorporate technology, you could use an interactive whiteboard and have the students input their responses.

Before beginning the You Do portion of the lesson, show students <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jCAIk0DOHD1BzqbYl0jLEE9jQz6yd_/view?usp=sharing">sample maps.

    Instruction

    You Do

Students will work alone or with a partner (small group) to create the map of their community. Students should use pencil to draw their maps.

    Instruction

Once students complete their map, you will begin the second day of this lesson. You will discuss the Ozoblockly or Color Code options. If you are using Color Codes, then students will need to be careful when coloring in their maps. Make sure you don't let them draw the roads until you have reviewed this part of the lesson. If you are using Ozoblockly then the roads do not matter because the Ozobot will not be following the color lines.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Student Instructions

    Instruction

Use your large paper and pencil and sketch out your community.

    1. Be sure to include places that are important to you.
    2. You must include our school, the police and fire departments.
    3. You must have stop signs and traffic lights.
    4. You must have at least ten locations for your Ozobot to visit.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Once your map is drawn out, decide if you will be using the color codes or Ozoblockly.

If you are using Ozoblockly, then you can begin coloring in your landmarks. These are the buildings that are around your town that your Ozobot can visit.

If you are using Color Codes, then it is important to use the correct color code markers. Make sure to carefully think ahead where your Ozobot will stop and where it will keep going. Think about what your Ozobot will do when it gets to a specific location. For example, when you get to the ice cream parlor, your Ozobot may be very excited and want to perform a tornado.

If you are using Ozoblockly you will be making these same decisions but you will have time to decide before you begin coding.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Instruction

Now it is time to begin coding.

If you are using Ozoblockly, decide where you will stop, where you will go fast and where you will slow down. For example, I do not like visiting the dentist, so I might go very quickly past that location, but I love pizza so I might pause (wait) there a while.

You can use the traffic light and police car lights when you stop at those locations. Make sure you pause (wait) at all traffic lights and stop signs.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal

    Lesson Extension (Optional)

Add student instructions for a lesson extension.

    Instruction

    Lesson Extension

Have your students switch maps with another group and code their Ozobots to stop at different landmarks in your community.

Have your students write a story about their community and have the Ozobot follow the story.

Please upload any student resources, videos, etc. (Max. size: 512 MB videos, 10 MB all other files)

    Goal
