Begin the lesson by asking the students to share what they know about coding. Call on several students to share their personal experiences with coding.Explain that today the students will be using code to program an Ozobot to help them retell the events from a story.Introduce the students to the book The Napping House: Audrey Wood. (You can either read a copy aloud or watch the attached YouTube link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uhyQqXs-8E&t=1s)
After reading/listening to the book, ask the students to help you with the order of the characters laying in the bed on top of the Snoring Granny. (Snoring Granny, Dreaming Child, Dozing Dog, Snoozing Cat, Slumbering Mouse, Wakeful Flea)
Today we'll use a map to retell a few of the events from the story.Pass out the materials. (Markers, coding map, Ozobots, and the Ozobot codes of your choice.)Go over the color codes. Here are the codes/colors needed for the track provided: turbo (blue, green, blue) nitro (blue, green, red) snail (red, green, blue) fast (blue, black, blue) pause (red, blue, red) and end of maze (black, green, red)Remind the students that the need to color in neatly in order for the Ozobot to read their code correctly.
Teacher tip: watch the track pattern. You may need to instruct the kids to color the codes for nitro and snail in reverse. The codes for fast and pause are the same in reverse. The reason for this is because of the way the Ozobot will be traveling on the track.
As the bot travels around the map, have the kids practice saying the order in which the characters slept on top of the Snoring Granny. The picture clues around the track will help.
For closure: Count down a start for the bot, have the kids call out the events as the bot reaches them. At the end, ask the kids to share their favorite code that the Ozobot completed today on the track
