If students have never used ozobots, go in a day or two prior to introduce ozobots and practice coding. Students should study Chinese New Year prior to this lesson and have a background knowledge of Chinese mythology and the impact it has on its culture and traditions.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

Design a city with parade route on poster board. Include items naturally included in a Chinese New Year parade. Code the parade route with markers. Design a dragon with your ozobot, a straw, dragon face template, and strips of colorful tissue paper. Send ozobot along the parade route. Bonus: narrate the parade, describing important symbols and events within the parade.

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Student Instructions

    Instruction

Draw your parade route on scrap paper first, denoting any changes in ozobot movement by name. Design ozobot dragon using paper face (colored), a piece of plastic clear straw, and strips of colorful tissue paper no more than nine inches long. Draw city and parade route in pencil on poster board. Add color coding for ozobot to travel parade route. Now you are ready to send your ozobot Chinese dragon through the parade. Have fun!
