    • This is a great end of unit project where students can apply their knowledge of animal adaptations, survival needs, and habitats. Before starting, select 2-3 animals and their habitats your students are experts on. Have students pregrouped based on their choice with 2-3 students per group. This lesson uses a Pine Marten as the model and students chose between a rattlesnake and a polar bear. This is Day One of a three day lesson.

    3. Direct Instruction (Teacher-Facing Instructions)

These are the steps the educator will read. Include any front loading, modeling or explicit instruction before students work independently or in groups.

    Instruction

Vocabulary: Today our word is maze because we get to start sketching our animal habitat mazes! Hooray! Today you will use your new knowledge to help you build a maze! Your job is to design a maze that show how your selected animal would behave to survive its habitat. When would it want to move fast? What would it need to get to survive? These are things your team will consider as they build today. Let’s take a look back at my maze as a helping guide as you and your teams build yours.

    Instruction

Model: Show model maze to probe out constraints using mix Cold Call, T&T, & Gestures a. Where does my maze start and end? Why? (Starts at shelter and ends at prey) b. Are there any dead ends? What do you notice near my dead end (yes 2 and there are codes before so Ozo doesn’t accidentally go to dead end) STAMP : I need to be thoughtful about where my codes go to help Ozo get to his prey c. Do you see any predators? What do you notice near them? (again stamping purposeful code to show what Ozo would do near a predator) d. Can you tell what habitat my animal lives in? How? (Arctic because you drew snow and ice)

    Instruction

Requirements: Friends, really nice job picking apart my maze. This is really going to help you build a tricky maze that show how your animal would behave to survive in his habitat. CFU: what does your maze need to show? Yes how your animal behaves to survive! Let’s go over things your maze must have before you start. List and point to model maze and CFU around a. The start of your maze is the shelter and the end prey b. 2 dead ends c. You need 1 predator d. 2 living things you’d find in your habitat e. Background habitat details

    4. Student Practice (Student-Facing Instructions)

These are step-by-step instructions delivered directly to the students as they work independently or in groups

    Student Instructions

    Instruction

Groups: Split students into their work groups. The group teachers then instruct in steps modeling each step themselves and then releasing students and supporting in teammwork:

    1. Add required icons (each teammate chooses something to sketch)
    2. Draw maze lines through all important icons
    3. Add 1-2 dead ends

    A. Lesson Closure (Optional)
Give tips for how to wrap up the lesson and assess student learning. (Want to add an attachment? Use Part C, below.)

Show Call & Closing: Today we sketched drafts of our mazes! Our mazes represent how our chosen animals try to survive their habitats. Check out maze. Notice how included . Do they have all the requirements? Nice job working as a team to complete your mazes! I saw team being good teammates by _. The more you share the work and listen to each other, the stronger your projects. Tomorrow, we get to add code to our work!
